Pierced | EN | ES | IN

Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out - John 19:34

Reflecting on the Gospel passage, where the dead body of our Lord Jesus Christ was pierced by a Roman soldier's lance and buried in a borrowed tomb. It moves me to the core of the wounds and pains that I've inflicted upon my Saviour, each time I harboured sin in my heart, my mind and my spirit. Whether it's the spirit of unforgiveness, the spirit of lust or even the spirit of envy. These are the unholy spirits that quenches the work of the Holy Spirit in my heart, my mind and spirit, and profanes my body, mind & spirit, which is supposed to be the Temple of the Holy Spirit.

As Isaiah wrote in his famous chapter on the Suffering Servant: "He was despised and rejected by others; a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces he was despised, and we held him of no account. Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isa 53:3-6 NRSVCE)

I'll close this short reflection with one of my favourite songs by Hillsong: Man of Sorrows.

Man of Sorrows

Verse 1

Man of sorrows, Lamb of God

By His own betrayed

The sin of man and wrath of God

Has been on Jesus laid

Verse 2

Silent as He stood accused

Beaten, mocked, and scorned

Bowing to the Father's will

He took a crown of thorns

Chorus

Oh, that rugged cross my salvation

Where Your love poured out over me

And now my soul cries out hallelujah

Praise and honor unto Thee

Verse 3

Sent of heaven God's own Son

To purchase and redeem

And reconcile the very ones

Who nailed Him to that tree

(Repeat Chorus)

Bridge

Now my debt is paid

It is paid in full

By the precious blood

That my Jesus spilled

Now the curse of sin

Has no hold on me

Whom the Son sets free

Oh is free indeed

(Repeat Bridge)

(Repeat Chorus)

Verse 4

See the stone is rolled away

Behold the empty tomb

Hallelujah, God be praised

He's risen from the grave

(Repeat Chorus)
